Passionate about control engineering and robotics, Maciej graduated from the Warsaw University of Technology with a specialisation in robotics. He now works at the Industrial Research Institute for Automation and Measurements on the construction of mobile robots and their simulation in advanced computer systems. The natural world is a rich source of potential solutions to engineering problems, and his mobile robots frequently draw from the motor and sensory actions of animals. His talk features images of robots that have been build at the Institute and inspired by caterpillars, crabs, snakes and mosquitoes, showing that even these smallest of animals can play a huge role environmental protection.

Maciej spoke at TEDxKraków, an independently organised TED event which took place on 20 October 2011 at the Manggha Centre for Japanese Art and Technology in Kraków, Poland. Our theme was "The New Normal" and we asked our speakers to tell us about what we might just have to get used to once the dust settles from the various ongoing geopolitical, financial and environmental crises.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations).
