Run-scrambling combines two of my fave activities - running and scrambling, obviously. Scrunbling anyone? Here's how & where to do it!

Let's assume everyone knows what running is, but scrambling is usually within the realms of the hill-walker. It involves low grade rock climbing without ropes on your way up the mountainside, which opens up a whole new world of truly adventurous routes.

Here on Jack's Rake on Pavey Ark in the Langdales (Lake District, UK), there are easy but pulse-raising moves on steep, rocky sections as you climb and run your way to a pretty awesome view at the top.

All you need is basic outdoor skills (kit, weather and navigation) and scrambling or rock-climbing experience.

Or just book with an experienced instructor like Charlie Sproson here from Mountain Run, and enjoy the ride! Book a guide from Mountain Run here: www.mountainrun.co.uk

Top 5 items of run-scrambling kit (plus affiliate links to purchase, this gives me a small percentage of the sale at no cost to you if you do decide to buy anything):

1 Helmet
Petzl Meteor 4
Not necessarily essential for scrambling on your own unless there is a significant risk of rock fall, but you may well be given one by a guide as a safety precaution.

2 Grippy trail shoes
Inov8 X-Claw 275 or Mudclaw 300
Trail/fell shoes with an 8mm drop, a secure fit (wide toe-box) and aggressive 8mm lugs that dig into muddy ground and hook on to rocks.

3 Gloves
Black Diamond Crag Half-Finger Gloves
A half-finger design is great for scrambling on rough terrain so you can feel the rocks at your fingertips but you don’t scrape the rest of your hand. I use some half-gloves from Accessorize though!

4 Long, stretchy leggings
Ronhill Everyday Run Tight
Super stretchy leggings are a must for the freedom of movement you need while scrambling. Long is good too to save shin and thigh scrapes on rough rock.

5 Stretchy waterproof jacket
OMM Kamleika Race Jacket £110
As with the tights, it’s important to have a jacket you can move freely in, and this waterproof is, unlike most, stretchy enough to reach for those scrambling holds.
