Those musicians of us of a "certain age" will recall the dusty metronome for practising an instrument along to. Wind it up and then set your tempo - fine. This is of course until the spring gives out, or it drives you clinically mad. GarageBand on iOS is on hand to give you a more realistic approach, especially for pieces/tunes with a swing feel. in the new ABRSM Grade 1 piano syllabus, you can play a song written in the year 1415, along with a tune written in 2015, representing the diversity that music demands. Both of these pieces can be played along with the "drummer" section of iOS GarageBand, the device itself just sitting on your music stand. Rhythmic accuracy is very often overlooked in favour of the notes, resulting in a performance that wanders a bit too much - of course, Chopin Nocturnes need rhythmic flexibility (Rubato), but still with a framework in place. iOS brings the metronome into the modern arena, with extra detail to give you the perfect practice tool!
