The University of Maryland conducted a social experiment involving 200 of its students; the goal of the experiment determine the effects of media withdrawal. For 24 hours, these students were without their beloved cell phones, computers, and any semblance of connection to the internet. At first, some of these students were at peace without Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, or email; but it was just a matter of time before many students realized exactly how bad their media addictions were. Students experienced symptoms of withdrawal that were exemplary of crack and heroin addicts going cold turkey. Some students just couldnt handle it while others found a way to cope. Ultimately, going without the information-based stimulu proved a hard task for many students, and Im sure would prove difficult for others as well. The University of Marylands findings only scratches the surface of how connected weve become to our beloved technology and social media experiences; who knows how bad our media addictions have really become.
