Virginia Senator Creigh Deeds, 55, is currently in stable condition after suffering stab wounds to the chest and head, allegedly inflicted by his 24-year-old son, Gus Deeds, according to police.

Reports say the senator was arguing with his son at his home in Bath County, Virginia before his son attacked him, stabbing him in the chest and head. Senator Deeds then walked down the hill from his Millboro home onto Route 42, where he was discovered by a cousin who happened to be driving by. A 911 call was made from the cousin's home. The senator was sent to a relative's farm, from where he was flown by helicopter to a hospital for treatment.

First responders who arrived at Deeds's home found Gus Deeds suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are still investigating the motive, but are not searching for other suspects. However, Gus Deeds had undergone a mental evaluation a day earlier, which was performed under an emergency custody order.
