Mother Teresa (now St. Teresa of Calcutta) famously stated, “If you judge people, you have no time to love them.” This is true; for example, I cannot both throw physical stones in judgment of a neighbor while simultaneously feeding them, sheltering them, or lending them a hand in their addiction recovery. Jesus taught the same in Luke 6:37; we are not to judge or condemn sinners but instead we are to forgive, give to, and love them (v.37-38). Yet we must be careful not to mistake rebuke and judgment; Jesus did teach us to rebuke those who sin against us while simultaneously walking in mercy (Luke 17:3). Peter passionately rebuked Simon the Sorcerer in Acts 8:20-23. Peter himself was rebuked by Paul for not walking in line with the truth of the Gospel in Galatians 2:11-14. Therefore we must ask what is the difference between biblically defined judgment, condemnation, and rebuke? When are we to rebuke? When, if ever, are we to judge? Finally, how do we ensure we’re not walking in unsanctioned judgment with our neighbors?
