When practicing the scale I suggest playing it on all six strings but when applying it you may only want to use a piece of it. When playing the entire scale a position shift is involved between the fifth and fourth strings. I usually use the fourth through the first string when I'm implementing it into my soloing to side-step the position shift on the fifth and fourth strings. Of course the string-skipping approach is more technically challenging but it also gives the scale an unusual flavor.
