Some 2,300 people have been quarantined in South Korea to prevent the further spread of the deadly Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, or MERS, which has already killed six people and infected at least 87.  

MERS is believed to have originated in Saudi Arabia and was spread to Seoul when a member of the South Korean air force flew back from Saudi Arabia to the U.S. air base in Osan. Most cases of infection have emerged from hospitals where patients have had contact with infected loved ones or health workers. 

More than 1,800 schools around South Korea have been closed to prevent the further spread of MERS, and the government is reportedly tracking the phones of those who have been put under quarantine to make sure that they follow the restrictions. 

According to the World Health Organization, 1,179 cases of MERS have been confirmed across 25 different countries, including two reported cases in the United States in health workers who had lived in Saudi Arabia.
