Dr Alexandros Charalambides is a Mechanical Engineering graduate and holds a PhD from Imperial College London. His PhD project was funded by Honda R & D Co, Ltd of Japan. He has worked at Imperial College London, at the University of Tokyo and on his return to Cyprus, at the Energy Service of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism and at the Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency. In 2009, he was appointed a Lecturer in the Department of Environmental Science and Technology of the Cyprus University of Technology. He is married to Theodora Sergidou and together they have a 9 month old daughter. After a big explosion on July 11, 2011 that destroyed the main electricity power generating plant of Cyprus, a change in mentality on energy usage became imperative to overcome a scorching summer heat with limited electricity. With impetus from this event, in this TEDxNicosia Talk, Dr. Alexandros Charalambides is asking whether the global community is prepared for a global black-out due to energy waste and what each one of us can do to prevent such blackout. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x=independently organized event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. * (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
