The departure of Arlen Specter from the Republican Party had less to do with personal beliefs than it did with preserving his political career. But his departure wasn't a decision that he freely made - Specter was basically forced to abandon his party. This is part of a larger plan by GOP faithfuls like Newt Gingrich and Grover Norquist to rid their party of any independent thinkers. Robert F.
