This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Jim Simon says that humanity's need to eat will NOT make us kill the ocean we love. We're accustomed to thinking in terms of land, and the trade-off between food production and protecting wildlife. Eating wild fish is lighter on the planet than eating other animal protein, he notes, and says that there is synergy between conserving ecosystems and producing food. Jim Simon is the president of Oceana, the largest international conservation organization fully dedicated to protecting the oceans. For nearly 20 years, Simon has made the environment the focus of his legal career, holding leadership positions in government and nonprofits, and advising businesses on management strategy and operations. Simon is a graduate of Yale College and Harvard Law School, where he was an editor of the Law Review. He served as Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Environment and Natural Resources Division of the U.S. Department of Justice from 1994 through 2000. Simon's goal at Oceana is to help preserve and improve the health of the oceans through fact-based advocacy in cooperation with Oceana's professional staff and supporters in North America, South America, and Europe. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
