Dr. Peter Coombes is one of the world's experts on rainwater harvesting systems. Together with his grad students, they have conducted leading-edge research into the importance of the sludge layer and biofilms in rainwater tank systems. These layers have been shown to bioaccumulate heavy metals, microbes and debris from the water.  Here is a link to an incredible paper that Dr Spinks did alongside Dr Coombes on the inceidental treatment train within well-designed rainwater harvesting systems.
