You wanted to know what the minimum age is that doctors recommend for a woman to stop nursing. And it's actually most beneficial for babies when they're exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months of life, and then solids should be introduced after that while they continue to breastfeed until a year unless the woman and baby want to continue nursing. The World Health Organization actually recommends that babies nurse for 2 years. When it comes down to it, the most important thing is that a baby is happy, healthy, and gaining the appropriate amount of weight. And if a woman and baby are able to accomplish this by breastfeeding for 6 months, 12 months, or however long it might be, then that's great. But there are some times when, for one reason or another, it's not possible to nurse a baby for that amount of time. And thank goodness we have formula that is able to provide a baby with the nutrition they need to grow and thrive. If you have specific questions and concerns about breastfeeding, talk with your pediatrician and a lactation specialist who can work with you. And if you have more questions in the future for me, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/IntermountainMoms, and recommend us to your friends and family too.
