(4 Oct 2018) Melania Trump arrived in Nairobi on Thursday evening as part of her first major solo international trip as first lady. She was greeted by a young girl holding flowers on a red carpet as she disembarked the plane. Mrs. Trump opened her four-country tour in Africa on Tuesday in Ghana before heading to Malawi. She also has a planned stop in Egypt after her stay in Kenya. While the first lady highlighted USAID's work in Africa, the Trump administration has been trying to cut the agency's funding. In its first two budget proposals, the administration sought to slash funding for the State Department and USAID by roughly 30 percent. Widespread bipartisan opposition to the steep reductions in Congress, where the budget proposals were essentially ignored, foiled the administration's plans.
