More than a year after devastating fire, Rabbit Hash General Store reopens

RABBIT HASH, Ky. (WKRC) - More than a year ago, much of the historic Rabbit Hash General Store was reduced to ashes. But now, it's standing tall again, ready to welcome an eager crowd.

The Rabbit Hash General Store was a working store since 1831 until a fire destroyed it in February 2016.

The general store is popular place--and not just for locals. People came from near and far to this community gathering spot right by the river. As people heard the news the store burned down, they flocked there that morning, devastated and recounting all of the years of memories of the store--dating back generations for some families.

For more than a year now those who hold the general store near and dear to their heart have been eager to see it up and running like they remember it. That day is finally here, but it has been quite a process.

From dismantling, cleaning and storing the remains of the original store, they also had to dismantle and move four buildings of similar age for building materials.

They've gone through several inspections and approvals from building inspectors and also historic preservation organizations. On Saturday, the community will finally get to celebrate all the hard work to restore the historic landmark.

A day-long celebration has been planned as the general store sets to reopen to the public. There will be live music with performances by Mike Hicks, The Stardevils, The Modified and Cadillac & Catfish.

Some of the town's seasonal businesses like The Scalded Hog restaurant and Amber's Antiques also will be open for the first time this year.

After more than a year of hard work, it will finally feel like old times.

"It's kind of a little melting pot for the community," said Rabbit Hash Historical Society president, Don Clare. "You'd come down here and spend hours, sometimes not even spend a dime. So it served a lot of purposes for the town and the community and everybody responded appropriately to get it back."
