Have you always wanted to tour the Holy Land up close without the hassle of actually traveling to Israel by airplane? Hi, my name is Jonathan Lipnick and I am a professor at the Israel Institute of Biblical Studies. I want to invite you to join me on an exciting virtual tour of the Land of Israel. From the comfort of your home, you can walk with me through some of the most sought-after sites in the Holy Land including: the Sea of Galilee, Bethlehem, Nazareth, Jaffa, Tel Aviv, the Dead Sea, Masada, the River Jordan, and of course, Jerusalem. We begin our trailblazing series of Vlogs in the Old City of Jerusalem with an overview of the eternal capital’s landscape. We head to the roof of the Tower of David, Jerusalem’s most famous ancient citadel, for a breathtaking panoramic vista. Next, we dive into an in-depth series of documentary videos exploring the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. According to ancient tradition, this church preserves the authentic site of the crucifixion and burial of Jesus Christ. We will explore the rock of Golgotha and the tomb of Christ as well as the Chapel of Helena, where fragments of the True Cross were discovered by the Emperor Constantine’s mother three hundred years after the crucifixion of Jesus. From here, we will walk along the Via Dolorosa, following the Stations of the Cross where Jesus suffered en route to Calvary. We then enter the Jewish Quarter, which is overflowing with synagogues, Torah academies (yeshivot) and art galleries. Here we will explore the stones of the Western Wall, the only remnant of Herod’s magnificent Temple complex. We will take a close look at the fascinating archaeological excavations at the foot of the Temple Mount which contain remnants of Jerusalem’s ancient marketplace and ritual baths (mikvaot). We will walk up the very stairs used by every pilgrim who entered the Temple. We then head to the City of David, the original site of Jerusalem from the period of the Old Testament. We will literally walk on the same stones trodden upon by the famous Hebrew prophets of the Bible: Isaiah, Jeremiah and Zechariah. We will explore 4000-year-old walls built by the Canaanites before the city became the Israelite hub par excellence. It was here that King David and his son Solomon revolutionized the city’s landscape, turning Jerusalem into a royal capital. We will walk through the Siloam Tunnel, a marvel of ancient engineering dug underneath the city by King Hezekiah in the year 701 BCE to preserve Jerusalem’s only water supply, the Gihon Spring. We then head to the Mount of Olives to explore some crucial sites visited by Jesus during his final week in Jerusalem. Most importantly, we will visit the Garden of Gethsemane, an ancient olive grove where Jesus paused to pray and was overtaken by the authorities under the cover of darkness. We end our tour of Jerusalem at Mount Zion, a small hill outside the Old City containing the Last Supper room and the Tomb of King David, as well as the Dormition Abbey.
