With the Europe wide scandal over the contamination of meat products, from beef burgers to lasagne, showing no sign of abating, Muslim community took the matter to House of Lords. As more and more halal products are been detected with pork DNA, Karwan e Fikr - UK and ANSA presented their findings to leaders of Muslim community at the House of Lords on the 23 April 2013. House of Lords member Lord Nazir Ahmed, one of only four Muslim peers in the UK, chaired the meeting. Following reports of Pork DNA in pies and pasties in prisons which were certified halal by Halal Food Authority (HFA), halal sausages at Westminster primary school and most recently halal chicken burgers. Karwan e Fikr teamed with ANSA (association of Non Stun Abattoirs) who propagated the zero tolerance approach to food adulteration for multi-faith communities. Credit was given to the Irish Food Standard Agency for highlighting the discovery of horse meat and pork adulteration in beef burger earlier this year, otherwise UK's three million Muslims consumers would never have found out about Horse meat/PORK contamination in halal food supply chain. Research report presented by ANSA highlighted serious failing by Food Standards Agencies and the Local authorities in adopting their own guidance on halal food, thereby failing to understand and tackle the core issue of protecting the Muslim community in the UK where claims of halal meat/food on sale are made, their role should be to validate this, is it in fact halal. Halal guidance lays out the lowest common denominator for halal requirements. This requires enforcement officers to ask and seek this clarification of traders as laid out in the halal guidance. Its failure to follow the instruction given by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) to use the FSA halal guidance issued to enforcement officers by using delaying tactics to avoid implementing and using the guidance. Moreover, a failure to fulfill the Equality and Diversity claim laid by all local authorities to protect it's residents, and to treat all communities individuals equally irrelevant of colour creed or religion . Local authorities failure to adopt or use the halal guidance notes could only lean towards Islamophobia and discrimination for the benefit business with halal claims such as a main stream fast food chicken outlet. All food local enforcement authorities have a legal obligation to carry out a Food Standards Inspection, which is to address claims. For LA to discharge this legal requirement/duty the FSA have armed enforcement officers with the FSA halal guidance to address halal claims. Lord Nazir Ahmed Said in his opening remarks, 'consumption of halal is far greater then production, an issue that needs to be addressed by local elected members and local authorities ' Mohammed Saleem Policy and communication director for ANSA said 'It is paramount that people of good-faith in the UK and other European countries to get themself involved in the political system to protect religious freedom and to create a just society for all. The integrity of food is of great religious importance to Muslims as it is to all people of all faiths, as it has an impact on one's faith. The fact that these products are adulterated, are in violation of secular law and the authorities have an obligation to investigate and remove these products regardless of whether it is a halal issue or not'. Natasha Rabia Shiekh CEO Global Art & Culture and a leading broadcast journalist and consultant said 'It is an outrage that food fraud of misleading labelling is taking place on such a wide scale, the perpetrators of the crimes against Muslims consumers must be prosecuted and made to feel the full force of the law should be fines and prison .' Shakir Qureshi , chairman Karwane Fikr The event organisor said 'This is Burning issues that affects us all, to be told that halal labelled food is contaminated is nothing short of an outcry, we are concerned about the extent that some of these food producer have gone for monetary gains, to defraud unsuspecting Muslims, that is why we are calling for prompt actions to be taken against the culprits and will be lobbing our elected members across the UK General consensus at the meeting was that the Prophetic method of slaughter was the only way forward for true halal , any other method of slaughter could be deemed as haram and the FSA guidelines to be made mandatory, Only then businesses would be more likely to comply as "The FSA can take those people to task, instead of just taking away a certificate like halal certifiers do.
