May: EU immigrants won't get priority after Brexit

(2 Oct 2018) The British government says that new post-Brexit immigration rules will give people with needed skills priority over low-skilled migrants - and there won't be preferential treatment for citizens of the European Union. All EU nationals can currently live and work in Britain, but that will change after the country leaves the 28-nation bloc next year. Prime Minister Theresa May says Britain will remain an open country, but "for the first time in decades, it will be this country that controls and chooses who we want to come here." Under the proposals announced Tuesday at the Conservative Party conference applicants from any country wanting to settle in Britain will have to meet a salary threshold. The government also confirmed that all EU citizens currently living in Britain can stay.
