Mr Robert Foster and his wife Libbie, tourists from Oxfordshire, United Kingdom, travelled aboard Nilagiri Passenger to Ootacamund from Coonoor, at 10:40 A.M.on October 16, 2012. They were on a visit to Ooty to recollect Robert's childhood days in the Nilgiri Hills.
They were a bit disappointed because of the change of engine from steam to diesel at Coonoor, as this was not there till late 1990s. This remains as such to this day and many foreign tourists and steam enthusiasts have expressed their displeasure as it takes away the charm of this scenic hill railway.
The YDM-4 diesel engines were brought to the hills following conversion of mainline metre gauge (1000 mm) tracks to broad gauge (1676 mm) under Project Unigauge of the Indian Railways. An idling diesel locomotive in the station yard muffled the sound of the rushing train.
