(5 Sep 1987) SP07098709 USA CYCLING Pro-Am Mountain Cycling Championships. Hans Rey (Switzerland) wins. Hans Jorg Rey of Switzerland stole the show at the Pro-Am Mountain Cycling Championships in Durango, Colorado, on Saturday (5/9) when he won the men's Expert class acrobatic cycling title. Rey finished with only eight points in an event where each point counts as a penalty. The riders were penalised each time they touched the ground during a variety of disciplines, including inching bikes uphill, crossing boulders and downhill runs. Rey said afterwards that he has to face tougher competition in Europe, where the sport is widely popular. Even though American's have taken to mountain cycling in a big way, they still have a long way to go to achieve the standards found in European competitions. The runner-up in Saturday's event was Jim Trigonis of the U.S. with twelve penalty points.
