Arduino is a prototyping environment. This video shows how the micro controller can be programmed, removed and set up to work off batteries on a breadboard. All done on the kitchen table. There are more components that should be added i.e. pull up resistor to reset pin, Capacitors either side of the crystal and a current limiting resistor in series with the LED but this works without and makes the demonstration less cluttered.
