Danish artist Torben Eskerod offers a meditation on the role of photography in the persistence of memory with his evocative body of work, “Campo Verano.” Named after Rome’s largest cemetery, Eskerod’s series gracefully reinterprets small photographic portraits affixed to tombstones he encountered amongst the many gravesites there Campo Verano With his photographic series Campo Verano, Torben Eskerod explores the status of the photograph as a memory image and a memorial as manifested in the photographic portrait. Campo Verano is a series of portraits reinterpreting the photographic portraits affixed to grave markers in Campo Verano, the largest cemetery in Rome. However, by removing the pictures from their original context, they undergo a transformation, whereby Eskerod, through the enlargement of the photographs, makes visible the details and image structures, which are then able to enter new creations of meaning. These structures reveal the impact of time on the materially, reminding us of the implicit presence of death in the photograph as maintenance of a bygone moment. Torben Eskerod is educated from Aalborg University (1980-86) and has studied at Aarhus School of Architecture and Fatamorgana School of Photography in Copenhagen (1988-91).
