For the last couple years I have felt a bit at sea. I’ve been worried and haven’t been able to sleep right. I saw my doctor and asked him if he’s heard this from any of his other patients. Yes, he replied. I hear it almost every day. An artist may never know how their work affects people. And what is received by an audience may be very different from the artist’s intention. But as I experienced Paula John’s performance of Valley of the Dolls, I felt my own experience. And this is a gift and a consolation.
