Welcome to Rhythm Guitar - Episode 19. Being able to create accurate guitar rhythms within the; Ska, Dub, and Reggae styles means that there will be several unique variations to learn across the principle grooves. The most common rhythm that is popular in Reggae is the "back-beat" meter, played with down-stroke pick attacks. Next to that feel, there’s also the “One-Drop,” (where the drum drops the beat of “1” and the guitar focuses on the beats of 2 and 4). In Ska playing, we have the “Up-Stroke,” and the “Skank” rhythm hit which focuses on staccato back-beat shots. Generally the most important thing to be able to sound Reggae or Ska is to master the ghost notes that occur across some of the down-beats and the use of that effect when it’s clipped across the up-beat on the higher string sets. As usual, mastering the Ska & Reggae feel has a lot to do with listening. So, along with playing these examples, be sure to listen to a lot of music within these genres as well.
