If the accumulation of CO2 and other GHGs in the atmosphere continues at the current pace, then sooner or later, the earth will cross a tipping point beyond which global warming will set off a succession of changes in the earth’s biosphere that will make global warming self-reinforcing and take it out of human control. Against this background, Prem Shankar Jha’s book ‘Dawn of the Solar Age’ brings a ray of hope. In this conversation, Jha argues that the technologies needed for an immediate shift out of fossil fuels have already been found, and some have indeed been around for almost a century. He speaks at length about the untapped potential of two technologies in particular- concentrated solar thermal power and thermo chemical conversion of biomass into transport fuels.
