Conway hails Republican gains in Senate

(7 Nov 2018) White House counselor Kellyanne Conway hailed the Republican gains in the Senate Tuesday night, saying the results are a "real testament to the fact" that many voters want to keep President Donald Trump's policies going. Republicans held their Senate majority in Tuesday's high-stakes midterm elections as Democrats looked to gain significant ground in the battle for House control, rendering a mixed verdict in the first nationwide election of Trump's turbulent presidency. Conway said the fact "that we're not talking about a (Republican) shellacking," shows that the president "tends to defy" history. The president's party almost always loses seats in midterm elections. Conway said the fact that Republicans actually picked up Senate seats is "pretty remarkable and historic." She said Democrats in the House will "have a burden" to come to the White House and present policy proposals to the president that will be acceptable to both parties. With control of the House, Democrats could derail Trump's legislative agenda for the next two years and they'll claim subpoena power to investigate Trump's personal and professional shortcomings. Conway insisted there is no voter appetite for lawmakers to spend their time investigating and subpoenaing people. "That's a decision they'll need to make but you have to really give the voters what they want," she said. Some Democrats have already vowed to force the release of his tax returns.
