School Spending Approved

Buncombe County commissioners vote yes to purchase land for a new intermediate school in Enka. Residents were asking county commissioners to approve $1.98 million in spending that would go toward the purchase of land on Sand Hill Road. The board unanimously voted yes. Special funds dedicated to capital projects will be used to buy almost 23 acres of land. Another heated item on the agenda was the request to rezone a piece of property at the intersection of Cedar Mountain Road and Charlotte Highway in Fairview. The land owner wants it be zoned commercial. But neighbors say it would ruin their quality of life and create more traffic on an already dangerous road. With a vote of 6 to 1, the board denied the zoning request. Another zoning issues had to do with Asheville's extra territorial jurisdiction. In April, the General Assembly took away the city's authorities to zone land outside it's municipal boarders. It now is the county's responsibility.
