USB 1.1 can actually handle quite a bit of data.  It's still useful for human interface devices which don't require a huge amount of throughput.  While you can plug a USB 2.0 or faster device in, it's going to take a performance hit.  But as you can see in this video, I can run a backup from all 4 of these flash drives and still have the picture frames operate normally.  USB 1.1 also supported audio over USB, with guaranteed throughput.  Pretty impressive what can still be done with slow data transfer speeds, when used correctly.
