Myanmar: Ban reiterates his call to release Aung San Suu Kyi

United Nations, New York, 5 August 2009 - The Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon chaired a meeting of the Group of Friends on Myanmar at UN Headquarters. 
During the meeting the Secretary-General thanked the members of the Group for their strong support to his good offices efforts and heard their views on developments in Myanmar. 
The members of the Group welcomed his call for authorities to release opposition figure, Aung San Suu Kyi. 
The Secretary-General also reiterated the international communitys high expectations that the Government of Myanmar will act in Myanmars interest by taking timely and positive steps in follow-up to the specific proposals which he made during his recent visit to Myanmar, starting with the release of all political prisoners.
