You want to create a buzz around your music so that playlists come to you instead of the other way around. When it comes to shopping your music, it's important to protect yourself but copyrighting your songs isn't as a big of a deal as you think (01:12). A new strategy of getting your music out there is through social media influencers, especially on YouTube (01:35). You can license your non-sampled music to YouTubers who need background music and make a decent income. That eliminates any copyright infringement issues they might face by using certain songs (02:55). I also talk about the importance of joining a performance rights organization like ASCAP or BMI (03:59). It's ok if you don't have any placements yet. It's good practice to join and be in the system already. Another way to protect your music is to create your own LLC (05:30). This is how you should receive money, pay taxes, etc. There's a lot of information on here that can help the business side that you're going to have to face sooner or later.
