Situation in Congo Continues to Deteriorate, More People Forced To Flee Villages

United Nations, 24 February 2009 - Daily Briefing by the Office of the Spokesperson for the Secretary General. The situation in the Eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to deteriorate according the UN Refugee Agency. Since 13 February the "Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda" have carried out attacks in North Kiviu causing  some 3,000 people to flee their villages. These developments add to an already dramatic situation on the aground with some 850,000 people already displaced in the area, according to the UN Human Rights Council. Of that, 250,000 people have been forced to flee since August and for safety's concern have been required to move numerous times.
