Rice Farmers in Trinidad and Tobago on Wednesday protested outside of the Ministry of Agriculture Lands and Fisheries to get the attention of the Minister. They say they've not received any flood relief assistance from the Ministry since the October floods. Former Minister of Food Production, Devant Mahara, joined the Rice Farmers in their protest. He said the protest was their last resort as they've been writing to the minister for a meeting. In response, Minister of Agriculture Lands and Fisheries, Clarence Rambharat, said the matters raised by the farmers are being investigated by the Caroni County Office. Minister Rambharat said following the October 2018 flooding, the Ministry's Caroni Office conducted visits to affected farmers and have been receiving flood assistance claims. He said claims submitted by certain rice farmers have been questioned by the officers and added that none of these inflated claims will be submitted for consideration for flood damage assistance. He said in the Bejucal area where the Ministry's records showed that 1100 acres were cultivated in rice, claims have been made for 2200 acres. He said Farmers who recorded as having less than 100 acres under cultivation have claimed for 700 acres. The Minister added multiple claims have been made for one parcel and some farmers have made claims for parcels of land which they do not cultivate.
