An increasing number of companies are turning to interim managers to help plug short-term gaps in expertise. Unlike external consultants, these flexible, self-employed executives are a much more cost-effective alternative to a whole group of consultants. They work alone and often live in hotels away from their families often for months on end. It can be a lonely existence, but also a highly rewarding one not least in monetary terms. Top interim managers earn up to 2,500 euros a day. There are around 10,000 interim managers in Germany. Holger Treczack catches up with a few of them.
