Its been planned,designed and modeled for months now  532 drafts,all of them rejected. Indeed,some suggestions have triggered ridicule: bananas,smurfs and UFOs as symbols of German history. Yet many serious proposals have also been given the thumbs down. Star architects like Axel Schultes planned a stylized tree,stretching into the sky. For the jury even this wasnt good enough. Their reasoning: the monument should represent not only unity,but also Germany's long tradition of freedom reaching back to 1848. It seems Germany is struggling hard to find a suitable symbol of its history.
