Watercolour painting a 1700s Welch Fusilier. 'Fusiliers' is a name given to soldiers equipped with fusils. Its meaning is derived from the 17th century French word 'fusil' which was a type of flintlock musket.This replaced the older matchlock musket as it was dangerous to have a slow burning match with lots of gunpowder around. Flints were used in the firing mechanism instead.The name 'Welsh Fusiliers' came into existence in 1702. This piece of art was produced for the RWF Museum; http://www.rwfmuseum.org.uk and is part of their display used in banners within the Royal Welch Fusiliers Regimental Museum for visitors to view as they travel through the collection.
