Necla Kelek has been causing a furore with her books on forced marriage and the problems of Turkish integration in Germany. As the daughter of Turkish immigrants, she’s experienced a lot of her subject matter herself. Growing up, her father allegedly tried to attack her with an axe, and she wasn’t allowed to play sports at school for fear of ruining the family honor. While her older siblings accepted things, Kelek made her own way in life. She went to university, got a doctorate in social sciences and dedicated herself to fighting the oppression of women under Islam. Kelek says the traditional Islamic upbringing that’s still practiced by many families in Germany should not be tolerated.
