Bonavista is one of Newfoundland's oldest settlements, with a population of about 4,200. It has been called the largest all-fishing town in the province. 

There is a statue of John Cabot at Cape Bonavista, which may have been the explorer's landfall in 1497. 

The famous Bonavista lighthouse began operating in 1842. It is open to the public in summertime.
