Jinn's director and stars on the importance of sharing the Muslim black woman’s experience on screen

From writer-director Nijla Mu’min, the new film Jinn is a classic coming-of-age story told from a new perspective. Loosely based on Mu’min’s upbringing in Oakland, Jinn follows Summer, 17-year old carefree black girl, played by Zoe Renee, whose world changes when her mother (Luke Cage’s Simone Missick) suddenly converts to Islam, and Summer is prompted to reevaluate her spirituality and sexuality. At the SXSW premiere of the film, we spoke with Mu’min, Renee, as well as stars Maya Morales, and Ashley Foushee, about the importance of telling this story.
