Both John and Eric follow the same levels in this game and have to stop Elizabeth and prevent Dracula's resurrection, but Eric's motives go a bit further than that.

Elizabeth had cursed Eric's lover, Gwendolyn, and turned her into a vampire. Eric was forced to kill his own lover and swore vengeance on Elizabeth. Killing Dracula was just a bonus to him that John wasn't aware of.

I also recently found out that the boss before Dracula's monster form isn't a wizard form, but a completely different character: A witch known as Drolta Tzuentes. She's responsible for bringing Elizabeth back to life, and is also her cohort for trying to do the same to Dracula. 

She succeeded in doing just that before you fight Dracula, and she uses her magic to do it again and make Dracula into a monster.

These revelations and changes are why I prefer accurate localization. Thanks for watching!
