A small plane on a training flight crashed in a farm field in Leavenworth County, Kan., Tuesday morning.

Two men were killed, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol. They were identified as Murray Brown, 47, of Kansas City, Kan., and James Jambor, 24, of Texas, who was the pilot.

The twin-engine plane, belonging to Central Airlines, went down at about 10:30 a.m. near Leavenworth County Road 1 and Cantrell Road, which is south of Tonganoxie.

A spokesperson for Central Airlines, which is based out of the Kansas City Downtown Airport, said two people were on board for a training flight.

In a statement, Central Airlines said they are devastated by the sudden loss of one of their most senior pilots and a young pilot in training.

"You don't like hearing anyone going down, especially if it's someone you might have known or worked with," said Ben Peterson, who trained and worked with Central Airlines for nearly a year.

KMBC's Bev Chapman reported that the crash was witnessed by a road survey crew. The crew told authorities that it sounded like the plane was having engine trouble before it went down.

"When he started going up, it started sputtering real bad," a witness told KMBC.

The Highway Patrol said it appeared the plane crashed nose first.

"It looks like the plane crunched up from the top to the bottom. And the propellers and engine were buried down to the ground," a sheriff's deputy said.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
