From the bygone days of netbooks, here is the epitome of netbooks, the ASUS Eee PC.  What a stupid name!  Like most netbooks, this one fell out of use, and was given to me, complete with box.

But later netbooks actually came with Windows 7 Starter Edition, while the earlier ones came with XP.  While XP was certainly a better fit for the lackluster performance of the Intel Atom processor running at 1.6GHz, its days are pretty much over unless you have a specific program to run.  I wanted to see how this machine would handle Windows 7, so here we go!

First step was NOT to lose the XP load on the machine, and I wasn't going to swap out hard drives and whatnot, I figured it could use a reload of XP anyway so if nothing else I would make the recovery discs and start fresh.  

I forgot what pieces of junk these ASUS machines were.  I found to go to recovery you mash the F9 key, and once in there, you get a check mark or an X, hit the check mark and without warning it wipes out all your files.  In all my years, ASUS machines never quite got the Chinese out of them.  Poor or no documentation at best.  Horrible installation routines.  The list goes on.

So I had to go to plan L anyway, which was to remove the hard drive from the machine.  When you go digging for worms, you find them.  The Chinese plastic had lost most of its elasticity (known as "plasticizers") and became brittle, so several of the screw mounts broke during disassembly.

I installed a spare drive and set about installing Windows 7.  Fortunately, all drivers were built-in, sans the mysterious "Unknown Device" which nothing found a driver for.  When that happens, you force it to install the ACPI Fan driver and no one will ever know the difference.  Swept that one under the rug right quick!  Stay tubed for more!
