Sudan and Chad: Situation must be de-escalated "urgently" - UN Chief

United Nations, New York, 28 July 2009 - Noon briefing by the Office of the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General. The Security Council today began an open meeting on Chad and the Central African Republic, on which it received a briefing by the Secretary-General's Special Representative dealing with both countries, Victor Da Silva Angelo. Angelo noted the recent clashes between Chad and Sudan, and said that there is an urgent need to de-escalate the situation and resume diplomatic initiatives. On a seperate issue, Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator, Catherine Bragg is now two days into her five-day visit to the Central African Republic (CAR). Having met with local authorities and some Internally Displaced People (IDPs), Ms Bragg says she has been moved by the testimonies of civilians who describe their hardships and deplorable living conditions.
