Hi, my name is Sandae Bonare, I'm a Certified Nurse-midwife and an Advanced Practice RN. I work for The Avenues Specialty Center, Intermountain Healthcare. I was always interested in women's health and I read a book back in the '70s about midwifery and then decided to go into nursing. I went to nursing school in San Francisco and worked for a couple of years in labor and delivery and then went to midwifery school here in Utah. I have been working in women's healthcare since about 1980. I have graduated from midwifery school in 1985. I have been delivering at LDS Hospital and doing GYN care for the last 22 years here but had other jobs before. My favorite part of my job is I get to see the same women over and over again. In prenatal care I see them through all their prenatal visits, my GYN patients, I get to see them every year, they bring their pictures of their kids and I get to assess their health and they're wellness, see how they're doing. Are they exercising? Are they eating well? Are they happy? I like the continuity of seeing the same women all the time. I like to meet new women too but it's really fun to see the same women over and over again. I've seen some women every year for the last 25 years. I just really like women's health. I like to see strong women. I expected to have a couple of female children myself and I didn't, I only got boys. I have three sisters; I've always grown up around women. I think women need to be strong and healthy and happy to have strong and healthy happy families. Sometimes as a midwife when you're doing GYN exams and you see people who are unhealthy and you advise them and you work with them. You see them the next year; they're having the same difficulties and everything. But every once in a while you have somebody who really gets on the health wagon and they start to exercise, they feel better, you see the difference in their lives. They stop smoking, they stop drinking soda, they start doing things for themselves. Then they see how their life gets better. It's so exciting to see that when it happens. Sometimes it's rare. Sometimes you really got to work at it. I had to work at it with my own self. It is definitely a process but I really like seeing the process and people start to feel better and you see the changes in their face, you see the changes in their health, you see the changes in their goals. It's just remarkable.
