(15 Nov 2018) Papua New Guinea is getting ready to host Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is scheduled to arrive later Thursday to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Port Moresby. Chinese and Papua New Guinean flags lined the roads leading to the Stanley Hotel where Xi will be staying, and a Chinese-themed arch and Chinese lanterns were displayed outside the hotel. Xi is expected to be welcomed at the country's parliament on Friday, and will be attending ceremonies to open a boulevard and an academy. He is scheduled to give a keynote address on Saturday at the APEC CEO summit, a parallel conference, before his participation at the APEC Economic Leaders meeting on Sunday. Papua New Guinea is hosting the APEC summit for the first time, with hopes that the parade of world leaders will lift the mountainous Pacific nation of hundreds of tribal groups out of obscurity and attract investment.
