The settlement at Auchtavan in Glen Fearder near Crathie in the Cairngorms National Park, is a rare survival of a traditional Highland clachan or fermtoun. Abandoned at the end of the 19th century, the glen originally had three townships, but all that remains of Ratlich & Loine are stones, but at Auchtavan, one cottage and the horsemill survive and were restored in 2008 by Braemar Community Limited. The horsemill remains open for those who wish to visit, but the rare "hingin lum" cottage and Victorian picnic cottage are only open on a few days each year for people to get a glimpse of these historic buildings.
