The concept of this exhibition has got to do a lot with history of the MAPHILINDO event, but it is more connected to the imaginations of the contributors on how they become somewhat the mediators between the history itself and the audience who is the general public. The Being Maphilindo Exhibition is a “revisit” of the historical event that happened back in 1962. An event that almost took the whole Malay Archipelago by storm. Combining three great entities into one, but in the end the formation of this great entity ceased as many of the components were not in tuned to one another. Most of everyone nowadays has forgotten about that particular history and due to that a lot of misconception and miss understanding happened along the way. In remembrance to the event, this exhibition will highlight some stories that revolve around this story. Artists will participate telling a version their own “Maphilindo” experience. As a Malaysian, and especially a Sabahan, I obviously understand that Sabah has been on the hot seat when it comes to human migratory issues within the MAPHILINDO context. The exhibition here will not solve the problem that has been bogging all leaders from in and out of the country. The exhibits are merely opinions and individual understandings towards the issues. the idea why this exhibition is needed is because, we as a unit, as a fraction of a bigger entity has this fixed perspective on how we see the current situation is. by coming to this event, the general public will perhaps see the issue from a different perspective and stand point. we are not here to excavate, to display our differences and similarities and blame and condemned those who do not think like us , but rather to patch what has been broken and while doing that, we shall celebrate, what is same and what is not.
