Representatives of the 148th Regiment of the New York Volunteer Infantry were in Ithaca, NY the weekend of August 25-26, 2012 with a Union Army encampment on the grounds of the Ithaca Veteran Fireman's Association. Caren Cleaveland discusses a few of the aspects of GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) life from the Civil War era, including the rations, musket and canon firing, and the role that women played. The encampment is part of celebrations of the sesquicentennial (150th anniversary) of this tragic period in our history.
