U.S. aircraft hit by gunfire in South Sudan

Three U.S. military aircraft came under fire from unidentified forces on Saturday while attempting to evacuate Americans from escalating violence in South Sudan. The U.S. military said four service members were injured in the attacks.

Three CV-22 Ospreys were on approach to the evacuation site at Bor when they were hit with gunfire, the military's Africa Command said in a statement. All three planes were damaged. The most heavily damaged aircraft is believed to have been hit in the fuel line, an official of the military said on a condition of anonymity.

All three aircraft were diverted to Entebbe, Uganda, which is not where the aircraft took off from, the official said. Another aircraft then transported the wounded service members to Nairobi, Kenya, the statement said.

The four service members were in stable condition after receiving treatment, the statement said.

Officials at the Pentagon are now trying to figure out how to evacuate the roughly three dozen Americans working for the United Nations still in South Sudan, a senior U.S. official said on a condition of anonymity.
