This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Portland, Maine native and high school community activist Mohammed Nur describes the challenges and frustrations around being considered “different” from his classmates because of his cultural heritage. Born to Somali refugee parents, he is adept at living between two worlds—his family’s traditional Somali world and the American world in which he was born.

High School Community Activist Mohammed Nur, a native of Portland, is currently a senior at Deering High School. He is the President of his class senate, Model UN, and Co-president of the Environmental Club. He is a Maine Seed for the Seeds of Peace Organization and a King Fellow for the NAACP. His parents are Somali refugees, so he is adept at living between two worlds. He also has a younger sister. Mohammed feels passionate about many things—mostly about making change in the world.
