The old Pacific Ocean Park had a short successful life as a pleasure pier at the south end of Santa Monica from the late 50’s to the early 60’s. Sadly, the end of POP was a long slow painful death that by the mid-70’s it was falling apart for all to witness and spreading its former glorious wreckage all over the surrounding beaches.

During its heydays, it was also used for various TV and movie locations. During its remaining wrecked days, it was the general birthplace of Dogtown skateboarders (see The Lords Of Dogtown documentary for the details)…..and this….

This is a small fraction from The Firesign Theatre’s short film, ‘Everything You Know Is Wrong’, a filmed version of their 1975 comedy album of the same name. The short made its digital debut last year as part of ‘The Declassified Firesign Theatre’ DVD set with audio commentary.

In this commentary, it was revealed that this scene, a short commercial satire for ‘McGog’s Bros. Atlantis Carpet Reclaimers’ was filmed inside P. O. P. in 1974. There have been many photos of the old POP skeleton, but rarely has there been any film of the actual insides and considering the condition of the pier itself, it was a sad yet ideal location for this short apocalyptic scene….I’m sure the only thing they brought to the set was some fire.

This POP fact is so obscure that it not included the incredibly detailed P. O. P. book written by Christopher Merritt & Domenic Priore.

Long live the POP and the 4 or 5 Crazy Guys,
